  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Depop -- Excellent and illuminating. : Just when I thought there was nothing else to expound on or say about Oscar Wilde, this book gave me information I never knew as well as different perspectives that are intelligent and worth thinking about. The author took on a challenging subject as there are already so many books out there, and some of them read like something thrown together to make a buck, while others come with Wilde theories that are so far fetched as to be laughable. This new evaluation of Wilde’s art and life, is up there with the best written about him. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Hoppe -- Outstanding... : As I have several biographies about Oscar Wilde, I was not sure I needed another. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from robert lewis mitchell -- a new bio of o. wilde for a new century- : I read the Richard ellman bio of Oscar wilde - thirty years ago (HARD TO BELIEVE- THIRTY YEARS!)- it was excellent -maybe a little dry - however im half thru this new bio from England and its very well written as well as entertaining - I know the story pretty well from ellman and various movies and books- but this gives the right amount of period detail and family history to make for a great , epic read-some books im glad to get thru- this is one of the rare cases where I don't want it to end- the best ! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leslie Catalani -- Dense but well written : Dense but well written. More enjoyable than the Ellman biography in my opinion. Behemoth of a book and not for a casual fan. This is incredibly researched and detailed and about 900 pages of looking at details under a microscope. It's a great book! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Adam -- Amazing Work : Incredibly well researched. We get to know Wilde - his brilliance, his flaws, his work - from a detailed narrative woven together masterfully. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from G. E. Bertram -- Almost perfect : This is an excellent biography, well written, entertaining, and insightful, and very handsomely deigned. I'm sure Wilde would have approved. The only fault in the writing is the presence of several types--perhaps about ten--sprinkled throughout the book. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from George A. -- Not very readable : I am really trying to read this book. The subjects interests me. It's the writing style that is making it hard. The author throughs up long forgotten people and styles of art/literature and assumes that everyone knows what is being referred to without further description. Maybe I'm just not smart enough, but a college degree in nineteenth century English literature shouldn't be a requirement to read and enjoy this book. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Booring : Dry, dictionary like reading ( Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John -- A Magnificent biography of Oscar Wilde : This is the first major Wilde biography in over thirty years to really challenge Richard Ellmann’s 1987 masterpiece. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vanessa Heron -- A fascinating tale, told with style. : I have been looking forward to this book for a very long time and it really doesn’t disappoint. It’s fast paced and very readable. There is lots of interesting detail for those who know Wilde well, particularly in the footnotes, which are absolutely riveting. (This is from someone who rarely reads footnotes.) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tariki -- Excellent biography : It seems a futile game to seek to transpose the life of anyone to another time and place and once having done so to attempt to judge just how it would have all worked out. Oscar Wilde as the "Boy George" of his own day, Oscar Wilde given the option to wed and vow fidelity to another male. As said, futile. Oscar Wilde had his own time and place. Wrong also to seek to judge or pronounce upon any perceived "rights and wrongs" involved. Fundamentally we are all one within the "hidden ground of love"; mercy and empathy should be our only touchstone. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from R. S. Mathews -- A must read : This heavy book (I mean in weight) looks intimidating. Having read all previous biographies, well all that I know of, I felt bound to purchase it. It turned out to be the best and most balanced biography of Wilde that I have read. I was both lost in admiration for this man's ability to become famous using just his wits, and plunged into desperation by his destructive self-indulgence. A very flawed hero who was, nevertheless, capable of great generosity to friends and strangers. If you want to know the man, here he is. Superbly reearched and written. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from William Garry Waddell -- Matthew Sturgis does it again! : Read MS' super biography of Aubrey Beardsley and his excellent study of English decadence, "Passionate Attitudes". So I was really looking forward to reading this. His previous works were in the must have category. But this is even better. Excellent work, adding additional details to a supposedly well known story. Definitely the greatest Oscar biography. A worthy addition to an bookshelf. Deserves 10 stars really. Miss this at your peril. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 23, 2018 )
